climate control

Hello there
i am a new member to the mini cult , i have raced in rallying , hence my surname , i have purchased a very good looking and running cooper s 2002 , 100 k , the car is great exept for a very annoying trait , the climate control work fine in every day situation exept when in traffc , when ever i have to slow down in traffic , say less than 30kph or stop in trafic, the exterior temp reading goes bizerk up to 50 celsius and the ac does not function anymore ,
since the ac fonction very well(i have done a pressure check vacuum and refill) it is obvious the problem is not mcanical , rather in the control logic of the system.
if any one as a clue let me know , at least a starting point for my search .

What a weird weather day. It was screaming hot and then there was a thunder shower, then sun, then rain.

Those guys sure don't baby their vintage autos. They go all out and there were a few incidents.

Racing was also stopped a few times for oil on the track - and not from British cars either!

          Not Quite Harrison Lake Picnic
                           Sunday, August 24, 2008

Assembly Point:
The South East parking lot of Coquitalm Center, corner of Barnet and Lougheed Highways.

Assembly Time:
Between 9:30 and 9:55 AM for a departure at 10:00 precisely.

Destination:
Downtown Agassiz (yes Agassiz has a downtown).

Route:
Lots of backroads on this excursion.

Requirements:
As per normal, full fuel tank, FRS radio, picnic lunch (there are restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the stopping point).

Time Committment:
This is an "almost the entire day" event, this drive ends at the Highway #1 westbound Rest Stop just west of Clearbrook. at approximately 3:00 PM.

Vintage Racing Aug 16/17

Vintage Racing at Mission Raceway is Aug 16 and 17 this year. Sunday the 17th is when the car club corral is open and also when the cars from the corral get to do parade laps at lunch. No, you are not obliged to stay the whole day if your car is in the corral.

If anyone is interested in joining LAMB for the drive out there, we are meeting at the Chevron at 232 and Hwy 1. We leave the station at 9 AM for Mission which will get us there around 10ish.

Price is $10 each day.

Dancing with cones Aug 4

What a great day! There were thirty cars and quite a mixture. We had BMWs, Subarus, Porsches, a MINI, a Fiero, an MR2 and a Triumph. Brian had our Triumph TR8 with Chevy 350 on the course to learn how it handles. We brought along the MINI in case the TR was too tough to handle for a full day. Well, Brian spent the whole day in the TR and got in 38 runs of the slalom. Everyone was grinning from ear to ear.

There was some instruction but the day was pretty much slalom run after slalom run with the instructors getting in cars occasionally and giving driving tips.

The BMW club is thinking of doing another course like this in October. I'll keep you posted. Next year, they are planning 4 of these.

Our only problem for the day was not with the TR. It performed admirably. I got so caught up in picture taking that I ended up with a second degree burn on my right shoulder. Ouch!

Graham Price, the manager of MINI Yaletown Parts and Service, has gotten back to me with an exclusive R53 Cooper S (2002-2006 models) performance upgrade package for VMCC members:

Alta 15% Supercharger reduction pulley

JCW spark plugs

JCW air intake and larger injectors

JCW ECU software upgrade

Full stainless JCW exhaust system with JCW etched tail pipes

$2794.00 (includes labor) + tax $3130.00

Personally, I think this is a pretty good deal. This package addresses all bottlenecks that might occur should one do one modification but not the other.

To get a slightly better deal, Graham will give an additional 10% off the parts for a group buy-in of 3 or more people, which is an additional $225 off the cost of the package.

I myself have decided to go ahead and get this package - my Inspection II service is now due, and because it this service includes new spark plugs, new pulley belt and new air filter, I am in effect 'upgrading' these components with this package.

So, if anyone else is interested, we only 2 need two more interested people before the end of August, which is when I plan to do mine. Make yourself heard here!

It's only July, but I just received a note that AMVIV hotel bookings are now open. Last year, I think that happened in November. Over 600 MINI attended AMVIV5 this year. The room rates have come down a bit if you book early. I've made plans to attend next year. I went to AMVIV4 and other than the "gun incident", I had a great time and want to go again. I don't remember reading a report from Gothboy, but I think he went to AMVIV5.

Its been a while since I sent anything out, because its been a while since I had any news for you. Well, now I have a few things to pass along.

The 1^st is that we have signed a contract with Palace Station for AMVIV6, which means that the group rate is now open and you can start booking your rooms. Im not pushing you to do it now, but March is closer than you think.

We negotiated a new rate structure for this year. If you book your room by January 25^th, the rates are $79 per night and $119 per night for the Courtyard and Tower rooms respectively. These rates are $10 per night LOWER than in 2008. If you wait till after January 25^th, the rates go up by $20 per night to $99 and $139. I think this makes a nice benefit for everyone who KNOWS they are coming and staying at Palace.

The 3^rd and last thing I need to pass on in this email is the notification of a design contest. Many of you will be aware that Dee from CooperCards designed the AMVIV5 shirt, hat and event book cover. We have decided to make this an annual occurrence, having someone in the MINI community design the event artwork.

The winning submission will be used on the AMVIV6 event shirt, hat and book. The artists signature or company logo will be included on the shirt and book cover (space is at a premium on the hat). The winner will receive 2 free nights at Palace Station during AMVIV6 weekend plus one of the limited edition volunteer color event shirts using their design. Just got myself a Schwinn Tango folding bike that was on sale, ordering it was quite an adventure, as most Canadian Tires were sold out of it, their online website wasn't working, so I had to call their 1-800 number and order it over the phone. The bike came on time, and I also got a free shipping discount code to use when I opened my online account, so freight cost me nothing. On top of that, PST is not charged on online orders, so I got my bike for CHEAPER than if I had gone into a CT store and bought it!

Here are some pictures of the bike - as you can see, it just barely fits the trunk of a R53 Mini. In the newer R56's and the Clubman, it should fit without a problem at all. I had to spend a bit of time figuring out how to put the bike in a specific way without scuffing up the plastic surfaces of the trunk, but not until I had actually inflicted a scratch or two

Unfortunately, it appears this bike can no longer be ordered from the Canadian Tire website! It was the lowest cost folding bike I could find anywhere. Took it out for a ride, it works great.

So what is the name for a group of Minis??? As in a "gaggle" of geese, or a "Pod" of whales, a "school" of fish, a "parliament" of owls, etc, etc....
I rather like a "Murder" of Minis!!! (as in a murder of crows!)
What suggestions do creative members have?????

One and only one MINI in Rochester NY

So I was on a business trip to Rochester, New York. I was there for two weeks and did not see a single MINI until my last day there. Of all places, it was parked a couple of spaces next to the rental SUV I had.

Also special thanks to Miriam of Albany NY who contacted me via NAM and offered to take me motoring around the hills at Syracuse. She even volunteered to let me drive.
